Why is there a shortage of Enfamil Gentlease baby formula? ›

HHSC has been informed by Mead Johnson, maker of Enfamil products, that Enfamil Gentlease, Enfamil A.R., and Enfamil Reguline may have limited availability in some retail stores due to severe damage to its distribution center in Mt. Vernon, Indiana, caused by a tornado on July 9, 2024.

Gentlease is designed to be the sole source of nutrition for infants 0-6 months, and can be a major source of nutrition from 6-12 months. It may be possible to switch back from Gentlease to regular formula, but be sure to check with your doctor first.

The symptoms discussed above, such as diarrhea, extra gassiness, general fussiness, and discontent, are often signs that your baby needs to try a sensitive formula.

Dr Crosby: If your baby is very fussy, spits up constantly, is not gaining weight or feeding well, has blood in their stool, is very gassy or sleeps poorly because she seems to be uncomfortable, it's time to talk to your pediatrician and see if it's time to change to a gentle or hypoallergenic infant formula.

12 to 24 Months Old

When your toddler is 12 months old, you can switch from infant formula to plain whole cow's milk or fortified unsweetened soy beverage. You can do this gradually. You may want to start by replacing one infant formula feeding with cow's milk to help your child transition.

Enfamil and Similac, like most baby formula brands, also use corn syrup as an added source of carbohydrates. While Enfamil and Similac both use vitamins A, C, E, B1, B2, and B6 as essential vitamins in their formulas (in addition to other essential vitamins), Enfamil contains Vitamin D3, whereas Similac does not.

When changing formulas, we usually suggest switching completely over to the new formula, but your baby's doctor is in the best position to guide you. A change in a baby's diet often needs an adjustment period.

Most babies can change to a new formula without any problems. If you think your baby is having a difficult time changing formulas, talk to your WIC Nutritionist and follow the directions below.

Enfamil Gentlease is a 20 Cal/fl oz, milk-based infant formula designed to reduce fussiness, gas and crying. It has an easy-to-digest milk protein blend patterned after breast milk (whey and casein in a 60:40 ratio)* that has been partially broken down.

Canadian families experienced a limited supply of infant formula for several months in 2022 and 2023 due to considerable market disruptions following a four-month closure of the Abbott Nutrition manufacturing facility in Sturgis (Michigan, USA).

Purchase limits

We currently have online and in-store product limitations in place. Online product limitations vary by item and size, and guests may make a maximum of two orders of formula in a 24-hour period. In-store product limitation is four units per transaction.
